A security guard was shot and killed while escorting a group of patrons outside a south side night spot early Sunday morning, police said.

The Lake County coroner's office was called to The Community Hospital in Munster at 3:40 a.m. where Eric Lowe, 40, of Gary, was pronounced dead from multiple gunshot wounds.

The coroner's office ruled Lowe's death a homicide.

Several men were asked to leave McTavern's, in the 7400 block of Indianapolis Boulevard. after a dispute occurred shortly before 3 a.m., Hammond Police Chief Brian Miller said.

Lowe, a civilian working security for the establishment, was escorting the men to their cars outside when witnesses heard several gunshots, Miller said.

Co-workers found Lowe lying in the alley just north of the business, Miller said.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Detective Lt. Zeke Hinojosa at (219) 852-2971.

I finally meet ALL the family, everyone says I look, sound, act, and SMILE just like you. I think it was kinda hard for grandma at first to look at me cause it reminded her of you, but everything is perfect now! I'm pretty much Antionette and Theresa's little twin!!! Not to mention me and Dre's baby pics look almost identicle!!! We had a BBQ on Memorial Day in rememberance of you. It hurts so bad that I had to lose you in order to find them, but I'm so happy that I know who my family is now! And by the way, I have a baby due June 25th... a Son! You know what they say when you lose someone amazing it's not long until another is born, I guess he's my little miracle man, like you were to so many!

Because of the first few comments, I know it's him. I will always remember him, but my memories of him are from when we were kids cruising Broadway. He would dance in the middle of the street, back when Break Dancing was new. Nobody made him move, everyone stopped and watched, he was amazing!

Eric was the BEST worker my dad has ever had. He was such a sweetheart and loved to make others smile. He might be gone, but NO ONE can take him away from my thoughts and heart. RIP Eric (Herc) Lowe, you will be forever missed. You were such a hard worker and tried to protect everyone that was important to you, but now you can finally rest. This is a shame that it had to happen this way and I hope whoever did this will live in anguish and agony.

" Wow!!!!I am so shooked by the news that it hurts so. I met Herc back in the Bin Willies and Jansens days. We had the same passion for dancing. Then one day he walks in to the office that I work at. Herc (Eric) has cancer. My heart sunk. We really bonded through that time and I was so glad that I could be there for him in his time of need. He was always helping others. You see Big Herc did not like needles and everytime he came for treatment we had to use one. I helped him with his fear and told him over and over he was going nowhere. He had too many people to touch yet with his special smile and bid heart. It was funny how the tables turned on us: He was always watching for my saftely at the clubs and then as he would put it, "this is my nurse she is making sure I do not over do it and I just drink water." LOL
Herc (Eric) I will miss you!!!! You have touched my heart forever. "

" First and foremost our sympathy goes out to Herc's family. He was a great friend to all that got the privilege to know him. With that being said, I know he had to be a great son, brother, and a very important part of the Lowe family. I got the privilege to meet Eric several years ago, the day he applied to the Roofer's Local 26 apprentice program. I was very impressed on how he carried himself, the confidence he displayed and the big smile on his face. Yes, it was always there.
I got to watch him go through the apprentice program always offering to help in anyway he could. I got to watch him grow from a young man into a real good man.
Just a few weeks ago, Herc was awarded his journeyman's status. It was my pleasure to give him his journeyman card and yes he had a smile on his face as he always did.
This was a totally senseless act of cowardness. I, too, will have a smile on my face when the person or people responsible for this is sitting in jail for the rest of their lives. "

Like everyone else has said, Herc was a wonderful individual that was "always" smiling. He was fun to be around and he always looked out for his co-workers. I only hope that the bar had video of these "punks" either entering the bar or being escorted out. Or that workers or patrons of McTavern's can identify the "punks", b/c what they did was act cowardly toward an individual that was only doing his job. And, I couldn't agree more the "Angel" that McTavern's should start a collection as a reward for anyone with information that leads to the arrest of the individual(s) that took the life of a wonderful individual. Herc, you have overcome so many battles in your life and always come out on top. I remember looking over to you during a football game and watching you pop a finger back into place, or lay on your back on the sidelines to catch your breath just to get up and go at it again. You always had the fight inside you to do your best. More so, you always had it inside you to smile no matter what your surroundings were. You made us laugh and smile, and made people feel important. After meeting me just one time it was like you were a big brother that was always there to protect. You had a heart of gold, and were always willing to go the extra distance to help others out. I sit and look back at pictures from the days of the Steelers, and realize how grateful I am to have a friend like you. God Bless, RIP Herc "

I hate that I have a regret from that night of not being able to save a friend and semi-pro brother, who only made people feel good with his charisma and integrity. The memory/image of seeing you lie there on the ground imprinted inside of my mind for the rest of my life. It really bothers me a lot. Especially with three of us (In my entourage) working for police departments who were there. It bothers us that one of our boys had to endure a situation like yours. You brought smiles to everyone, not tears from which we suffer from now. I do hope they catch the guys that did this and show no mercy on them in the judicial system. The world needs more men with a heart and soul like his, it is unfortunate that his life had to end because of the ignorance and stupidity of others. I will miss him dearly and hold on to the fond memories that we shared. We recently went to Great America together and had a great time! Typical Herc, he was dancing in all the lines, laughing and talking, and taking our wait time and turning it into a night at a dance club. Let us all keep his family in our prayers! Herc...I hope to someday meet you in that dance club in the sky!

" Although I don't subscribe to any form of organized religion, I find it hard to believe that there isn't a G.rand O.rganizer of D.esign when I see the love that resonates from someone like "Hurk". I didn't know him well personally, but the residual effect of his kindness is obvious by the emptiness his death has clearly left to those who've felt moved enough to post. I too think that organized religion's definitions of a higher power leaves one wondering if in fact, there is one. Maybe God takes one soul to save the souls of a thousand others. In the meantime, keep an open mind and an open heart. I can only hope when it's my time to go, that I will have affected people in such a positive way, like Eric Lowe obviously has. RIP Eric. "

Laugh a minute only the beginning
Eric (my brother)
"Herc" Lowe this one's for you

Ever get the feeling you can't go on
Just remember whose side it is that you're on
You've got friends with you till the end
If you're ever in a tough situation we'll be there with no hesitation
Brotherhood's our rule that cannot bend
When you're feeling too close to the bottom
You know who it is you can count on
Someone will pick you up again we can conquer anything together
All of us are bonded forever if you die I die that's the way it is "

I'm so devastated by this i felt like i could have done something to prevent that even if it meant keeping him from working that day , we talk at least once or twice a week his mom is like my mom and mine like his , its going to take some time for me to accept the fact that i wont see him again , he didn't deserve to go like that but God has a better place for him and justice will be served . So those that knew him please say a prayer for his family and try to remember the goodtimes "
