VALPARAISO | Dr. Judith Monroe, state health commissioner, will speak at the State of Women's Health in Porter County event Thursday at the Valparaiso University Center for the Arts, 1907 Chapel Drive.
The event, sponsored by the Tobacco Education and Prevention Coalition for Porter County, Porter Healthy Woman Initiative and the Porter County Health Department, starts at 5 p.m. with a free reception, health screenings and vendors.
In addition to Monroe, Karla Sneegas, director of the Indiana Tobacco Prevention and Cessation agency, also will speak.
The forum brings Porter County women together to start a dialogue about women's health issues and how women can help promote healthier lifestyles through peer-to-peer education, a program developed by Monroe called Women of INFluence (Indiana Female Leaders Unite).
She believes women of influence can carry critical health messages at work, school, home, health and faith communities and make these issues relevant and visible to women. The marketing of tobacco products to women, in particular, will be discussed.
Indiana is second in the nation for tobacco use, with 25 percent of adult women smoking.
This free event is sponsored by Centier Bank and Porter-Starke Services.
To make reservations, call Porter Healthy Women Advisor at (219) 263-4437. For more information about the Women of INFluence initiative, visit influence.in.gov.
