LOWELL | There were more eyes than usual focused Tuesday on Fox's "American Idol: Season 7" as local residents watched to see if Amy Davis, 25, would make it to the next level.
"When the voting starts, that's when Lowell needs to kick in," Lowell Town Council President Phillip Kuiper, D-4th, told his fellow councilman and residents Monday, expecting Davis' talent to move her forward in the nationally televised singing competition.
Kuiper said Barry Davis, Amy Davis' father, is a longtime employee of the town.
"If she goes on, the whole town will get attention," he said.
Plenty of people in the Tri-Creek School Corp. are rooting for Davis as well. The Cedar Lake native is a 2000 graduate of Lowell High School.
"Amy was very talented in track. She was one heck of a hurdler and a good sprinter," Lowell High School teacher and girls track coach Chuck Naumowich said Tuesday. Hanging in his classroom, Naumowich has a picture of Davis from 2000 with other members of a winning relay team.
"At the time, she was in choir, too, so they were always singing in the back of the bus (traveling to track meets). She was the ringleader," he said.
Tri-Creek schools Superintendent Alice Neal also had high hopes for Davis prior to Tuesday's "American Idol" episode.
Amy Davis's mother, Jeanette Davis, was Neal's administrative assistant for several years.
"Amy was always focused, always responsible," Neal said. "It's not surprising that she has had the tenacity to get to this point."
Neal said Davis was a member of Lowell High School's choirs, including the show choir under the direction of Andy Anderson.
"She was athletic, too, and she's always been beautiful," Neal said.
