Times Staff Report

VALPARAISO | The man who has been robbing the First National Bank branch at 2904 John Howell Drive every few weeks struck again Tuesday morning.

Tuesday's robbery was the fourth at the bank in less than four months -- and police say all the robberies are believed to be related.

"We're pretty sure it's the same guy, based on the physical description," said Sgt. Michael Grennes, police spokesman.

Police said the robber is a Hispanic man in his mid-20s. He is about 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighs 180 pounds and has a "stocky" build.

During the latest robbery, which occurred about 10 a.m. Tuesday, the robber handed the clerk a note and got an undisclosed amount of money.

The bank also was robbed July 13, Sept. 14 and Oct. 4. In each of the four robberies, the robber was last seen running westbound from the bank.

Grennes said police were at the bank within 30 seconds after the Tuesday’s robbery, but the robber was already gone. Police had a dog attempt to track the robber's scent and the dog was leading officers southwest toward the university area.

Valparaiso police were joined at the scene by Valparaiso University police, Porter County police, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and the FBI.

Anyone with information about any of the robberies or who saw anything suspicious in the area at the time of the robberies is asked to call police at (219) 462-2135.

And just like robbing a bank is against the law , I do believe that driving under the infulence and using drugs is also against the Law . Sounds to me like we have some people on here that perhaps have been busted for doing one of the above or maybe all of the above . If you think you can do a better job than the Sheriff's Department I have good news for you they are hiring go APPLY ! Well that is part of their job to keep us safe from others neglect. And the people busted drinking or smoking pot, well your dumb. Keep that stuff for the privacy of your own home! Not when you're on the road with me and my kids! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK PC AND VALPO PD! To the rest of you get a hobby! "

" Hello...I have read through all of the comments here and it seems to me that people need to give the cops a break. Yes, the bank has been robbed 4 times. Yes, the cops have not been able to find the robber. It is possible the guy has ran somewhere and gotten into a car...so if this is the case, how do you suspect the cops can find him? I surely cannot answer the question, and I find it ridiculous that everyone is blaming the bank or the cops....how about blaming the ROBBER. He is the one who is doing this robbing. That section of town is so busy with people, it isn't a mystery as to why the robber gets away. I am glad that the cops are out getting 19 year old kids who are smoking joints and catching the people running red lights. Maybe the citizens of Valparaiso should stop running red lights and doing drugs so that the cops have time to look for the robber and so that they will not be tied up with these violations. "

County cops are supposed to be supporting the rest of the count mainly. my 2 cents on the robbery....that bank is failing its employees and clients by not providing enough security. its the banks responsibility to do this. lets hope this guy gets caught soon. sure wish theyd put up a better picture.....if they had one..... " Please stop blaming the employees. The employees aren't to blame unless it's an inside job that involves these tellers. Let's say the teller decides to try to stop this guy and gets seriously injured or killed. Then who will you blame this on? Employees at the branch need to be AWARE of EVERYTHING going on around them. There are telltale signs of someone coming in with evil intentions. Are his unglasses still on, is he looking around a lot, are his hands in his pockets until he's at the counter? It might be scary, but look this guy directly in the eyes as you deal with him. He's coming back because the employees are intimidated. Employees probably feel betrayed by the company and police since the robber hasn't been caught yet. Branch management NEEDS to back up their employees and do EVERYTHING in their power to keep customers' and employees' safety as their top priority! Hire that security guard/officer! Can't the police lift prints off the piece of paper this robber is handing to the teller? I don't know ALL the facts, but there seems to be a lack of common sense in dealing with this case. "

The tellers and the loan officers are just doing their jobs. I am glad no one has gotten hurt or killed. I am with "Tim". The next time they call in a robbery, they need to tell the police that the robber has a joint in his mouth while he is robbing the bank and they will catch him for sure. In this scenerio, Vegas has 9 seconds as the over/under for the Valpo city cops to get there. "

The bank gets robbed, the tellers are threatened and emotionally wounded, he gets to go back to his cozy little office and rake in the big bucks. Sounds a little unfair if you ask me, but I'm very biased as this has affected my life personally. Someone very close to me was one of the two tellers that was robbed the third time the robber hit, since then this teller has resigned. So my sources are very accurate, should anyone disagree, other than the CEO of 1st Source. "
