Boone Grove's Thill to be honored with two awards

PREP REPORT

Boone Grove baseball coach Rollie Thill will be taking home two honors from this year's IHSBCA State Baseball Clinic awards banquet. Thill will receive the Coach of the Year Award for District B and the Victory Club Award at the banquet on Friday, January 19, in Indianapolis.

"It's nice to feel that my peers feel like I'm doing a good job," Thill said. "I always respect their opinions, and we have a pretty good brotherhood as coaches around here, especially in Northwest Indiana."

In four years at Boone Grove, Thill has compiled an 88-30 record. Last year's team went 26-4 and advanced to the sectional finals.

Wrestling

Chesterton 46, LaPorte 25: The Times No. 5 Trojans got pins from Mike Tucker (135), Matt Jackson (160), Ryan Sanchez (215) and Adam Boatright (Hwt.) to defeat the Slicers. Alex Sanchez (125), Adam St. Germain (130) and Chris Hoenke (171) won decisions for the Trojans.

Portage 44, Lake Central 15: The Indians (13-10, 4-3 DAC) defeated teh Eagles by getting pins from Chad Allen (125), Tommy Torres (140), Justin Willis (160) and Billy Pearman (215) and decision wins from Sean McMurray (112), Mike Torres (130), Ryan Vottero (135), Cortie Wilson (145), Scott Cherry (152) and Nathaniel Coleman (171).

Crown Point 53, Valparaiso 15: The Vikings got a pin from John Small (215) and decision wins from Tom Churchard (125), Austin Zosso (145) and Will Hofflicker (160), but Valparaiso was still no match for the Times No. 1 Bulldogs.

Boys basketball

Westville 64, Culver 52: The Blackhawks jumped out to a 35-20 halftime lead and held on for a road win. Jeff Wozniak led Westville with 26 points and nine rebounds, and Mark Mosier added 17.
