Mike Rippy has been selected as the new president and chief executive officer of Mittal Steel USA succeeding Lou Schorsch, who will lead the corporation's new regional division as CEO of Mittal's Flat Products Americas.
The appointments were announced Tuesday by Mittal Steel USA's parent organization, Arcelor Mittal, which also revealed other management changes as well as the creation of the new division.
Schorsch, has served as president and CEO of Mittal Steel USA since the company was created from the combination of Ispat Inland Inc., where Schorsch was CEO, and International Steel Group Inc. As CEO of Mittal's Flat Products Americas division, he will report to Arcelor Mittal's Chief Financial Officer Aditya Mittal, who has overall responsibility for Flat Products Americas.
"I believe that the Flat Americas division is one of the most complex, interesting and promising divisions in the whole company," Mittal said. "We believe there are tremendous operational opportunities and strategic and synergy benefits to be captured in the new Arcelor Mittal American flat products division."
The company made changes in its key senior executive ranks to ensure the company captures all of the opportunities in the optimum time frame, he said, adding Schorsch's appointment and the other management changes at the U.S. operations will be key to achieving the desired benefits and performance.
"Lou has distinguished himself as a proven leader within Mittal Steel and has played a critical role in the successful integration of the ISG acquisition in the U.S." Mittal said. "We will look for him to play a pivotal role in the integration of Arcelor Mittal in the America’s and capturing the available synergies of the new, enlarged American flat products division."
In this new capacity, Schorsch will lead the integration and executive management of flat-rolled operations including integration and oversight responsibilities for CST and Vega do Sol in Brazil, Mittal Steel Lazaro Cardenas in Mexico, Mittal Steel USA and the flat-rolled operations of Mittal Steel Canada.
Rippy, who will continue to report to Schorsch, has served as Mittal USA's executive vice president of sales and marketing. He has two decades of experience in the industry, having previously held responsibility for finance, purchasing and human resources.
"Mike has made tremendous contributions towards establishing the Mittal Steel brand in the US market and in building a ‘best-of-the-best’ commercial organization," Schorsch said. "In his new role he will bring the same mindset and performance orientation to all of Mittal Steel USA, building on the successes we have achieved to date."
Dan Mull, who has served as the Chicago-based company's vice president of marketing, will succeed Ripply.
The company also announced that Bill Brake, the company's executive vice president of operations, is leaving the company to pursue other opportunities. He will be replaced by Len Chuderewicz, who currently heads operations at Mittal Steel Indiana Harbor, the company’s largest U.S. plant.
