Two Jasper County women were shot and killed Monday morning at a Family Express convenience store in Remington, according to the county Sheriff's Department.
Indiana State Police are seeking 43-year-old Melvin M. Keeling, who is driving a silver 2000 Ford Windstar minivan with Ohio license plate DW18AW, in connection with the Jasper County killings and a third homicide of a 13-year-old girl early Monday morning in Warren County, Ohio.
Police got the call that two people had been shot at the store at Interstate 65 and U.S. 24, and arrived to find the women lying behind the counter, according to a county sheriff's news release. Emergency responders took one woman to the hospital with weak vital signs, but she was pronounced dead there. The other woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
The police identified the women as Rensselaer resident Lisa Kendall, 29, and Remington resident Kendora Furr, 38.
Chief Deputy Sheriff Terry Risner said investigators believed the shootings occurred during an attempted robbery and that something must have scared the gunman.
"We are shocked and saddened by the senseless taking of the lives of our employees Kendora Furr and Lisa Kendall," Family Express Chief Executive Officer Gus Olympidis said in a separate news release. "The entire Family Express family is sharing in the pain inflicted by this senseless loss."
Keeling is a black man about 5 feet 7 inches tall, 145 pounds, with a moustache, brown eyes and a tight curly afro. He was last seen wearing a dark green T-shirt with a stripe down the sleeve, blue jeans and dark shoes, according to the state police. He is considered armed and dangerous.
An in-store video camera showed a suspect who matched Keeling's description drive away in a silver Ford Windstar with an Ohio plate, the release states.
Keeling, of Deerfield Township in Ohio, also was wanted on charges of rape and gross sexual imposition involving a child in an unrelated case, the sheriff's office said. The 13-year-old girl was involved in that investigation but was not the victim, the sheriff's office said.
Family Express is establishing a $10,000 reward for the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the deaths of the two women.
