MUNSTER | Police are investigating a report of an armed robbery at the Check Into Cash located in the 7900 block of Calumet Avenue.

Police Sgt. Steven Kovacik said the department received the call about the robbery at 10:24 a.m. Tuesday.

The business has been open less than two months, he said.

Kovacik said there haven't been previous problems at the two payday loan businesses in town.

A statement Kovacik released Tuesday afternoon said the man entered the business, showed a silver handgun to a clerk and demanded money.

The man ran away after the clerk turned over an amount estimated at less than $500. No one was hurt.

Witnesses described the robber as a black man whose age was estimated as being in the late 50s or early 60s, about 5-feet, 10-inches tall and of medium to heavy build. Kovacik said the man also was described as wearing a black cap and a red-and-black checkered jacket.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Munster Police Department at (219) 836-6600.
