Immanuel teacher wins $2,500 in technology for classroom

A kindergarten teacher's efforts to make learning the alphabet fun for her students at Immanuel Lutheran School won $2,500 in technology for her classroom from Best Buy.

Linda Lundgren, a longtime kindergarten teacher at Immanuel Lutheran, was among 36 teachers in Indiana who were honored by Best Buy's te@ch <mailto:te@ch> program. The program awards a $2,500 Best Buy gift card to schools in recognition of programs or projects that integrate interactive technology into the classroom and make learning fun for students.

"I'm just thrilled. This is such a wonderful thing for our school," Lundgren said.

At Immanuel, Lundgren's students create an "alphabet book" with pages they have created using computers in the school's computer lab. For example, for the letter "I," students use a drawing tool to make the shape of an ice cream sundae and paint the colors of the sundae using a "wacky paintbrush" tool. For the letter "H," the children use a stamping tool to create pictures of healthy foods. At the end of the year, the children compile their pictures in an alphabet book as a keepsake from their kindergarten year.

The project helps students gain a better grasp of the alphabet while teaching them a variety of computer skills. "I wanted to tie in their computer time with a project that would be pertinent to what we're learning in the classroom," Lundgren said. "By the end of the school year, all of the students have very strong computer skills for kindergartners. When the children enter first grade, there are pretty familiar with a variety of computer tools that they will use throughout elementary school."

At Immanuel Lutheran, the gift card will be used to purchase computers for the kindergarten classroom, so that students will have a computer workstation in the classroom that they may use to work on special projects or catch up on work they may have missed when absent from school. Currently, the classroom has just one computer that Lundgren utilizes for coursework as well as to assist students who may have missed their time in the computer lab.

Lundgren and the school's technology coordinator, Mary Hill, will shop together to find just the right equipment and software for a computer workstation for the kindergarten class.

Immanuel Lutheran is one of 1,200 schools in the nation to be honored through the Best Buy te@ch <mailto:te@ch> program. "Thousands of schools applied for awards through the Best Buy program. I just think it's wonderful that Immanuel Lutheran School was chosen for this award," Lundgren said.
