Sailboats can race at Wolf Lake on Sunday
Mayor's Cup Regatta 2004 is Sunday at the Illiana Yacht Club at Wolf Lake, on Calumet Avenue north of 129th St. It's an open class race for any sailboat less than 20 feet. The skipper's meeting is at 1:30 p.m. and the first race is at 2 p.m. Trophies will be awarded for first to fifth place for adults and first to third place for youths younger than 18 the day of the race.

Candidate aims to raise money
A fund-raising shoot for Indiana House District 1 candidate Dan Fagen takes place 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Deb's Gun Range, 6819 Kennedy Ave. Eight shooting categories are planned. They include a 25-yard bulls-eye shoot of 20 rounds for various bores; 10-yard poker shoot with a minimum of five rounds per hand and various bores. Trophies will be given for each category. All participants will be entered in the prize drawing. The fee is $10 per entry for one game and $5 to reshoot for a better score. Participants may shoot as many times as they like.

Society sponsors writing conference
The 2004 Gary Historical & Cultural Society Writers' Conference is Friday and Saturday at Trump Hotel. It features national workshop presenter Useni Eugene Perkins, poet, playwright and author of "Hey, Black Child" and other work. The conference will include other writing experts and workshops in playwriting, poetry, how to help children pass writing tests (free for parents), writing family or community history and how to write poetry (free for youths 10 and older). Area self-published authors and poets may participate by calling (219) 882-6873. Registration begins at 3 p.m. Friady at the hotel. Registration is at 8:30 a.m. Saturday. Fee is $25 for each day or $40 for both days with meals. Children 6 to 16 can compete in a poetry slam at 2 p.m. Saturday to win prizes by entering a poem or dramatic monologue. Entry is free but youths must be registered in advance.

St. Ann Parish provides fun for families
A Family Fun Festival will be Aug. 27-29 at St. Ann Parish, 6025 W. 25th Ave. The festival hours are from 4 to 11 p.m. Aug. 27, from noon to midnight Aug. 28 and from noon to 6 p.m. Aug. 29. The event will feature food, games, music and raffle. A chicken dinner will be served Aug. 29.

Battle on Ridge coming this weekend
Battle on the Ridge is 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Main Square Park, Fifth Street and Ridge Road. Battles take place at 11 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Saturday and at 3:30 p.m. Sunday. Cannon demonstrations will be at 3 p.m. both days and opening colors are at 10 a.m. both days. Food will be available for purchase.

Auxiliary plans trip to Canadian Rockies
St. Margaret Mercy Healthcare Auxiliary will sponsor a trip to the Canadian Rockies Panorama Sept. 18-25. The registration deadline is Sept. 1. Highlights of the trip will include Edmonton, West Edmonton Mall, Jasper Calgary and many other stops. The cost is $1,949, which includes airfare from Chicago.
