FRIENDS OF UNWANTED AND NEGLECTED DOGS: Promotes responsible care of canine friends

HISTORY

Established April 12, 2003.

Making a difference for dogs through education and advocacy.

Assists local shelters and rescue groups.

Advocacy and transport efforts extend beyond Northwest Indiana region.

Holds monthly meetings.

Nonprofit organization.

MISSION: "The mission of F.O.U.N.D. is to raise awareness of the plight of unwanted and neglected dogs, to educate the public on responsible and humane care taking of pet canines and to assist local shelters and rescue groups in their efforts to help the dogs in their care," state the bylaws.

SPECIAL EVENTS: Friends of Unwanted and Neglected Dogs publishes literature made available to rescue groups and distributed at community events as well as by members giving responsible pet ownership presentations to area elementary schools. Last year, the group published "Finding Family," a coloring book detailing the experiences of a dog taken from a family because of neglect and what happens to him at the shelter. "Leo's Story: An Old Dog's Tale of Survival," based on the true story of a dog rescued by F.O.U.N.D., will be available later this year. Group members will man a booth and distribute information at the Hammond Dog Walk June 5 and Humane Society Calumet Area's Pet Walk June 12 in Munster. Hogs for Dogs, a poker run organized by Harley Davidson Motorcycles of Michigan City, will take place Aug. 21. F.O.U.N.D.'s annual fund-raiser, Foto with Fido, is Oct. 16 at McMahan Seed in Valparaiso. This is an opportunity for pet owners to have a professional portrait taken with their

favorite canine or canines. Proceeds will support the group and Mixed Up Mutts, a rescue group operating in LaPorte.

ADVICE: "This is a good way for people who don't have the heart to volunteer at your local shelter to help animals," said Deborah Pace, F.O.U.N.D. president. "It's also a way to address the problems that result in dogs winding up at shelters."

HOW TO GET INVOLVED: Friends of Unwanted and Neglected Dogs meets once a month at Daybreak Church, 2307 Roosevelt Road in Valparaiso. For information on June's meeting, becoming a supporter or upcoming events, call (219) 464-0093 or e-mail Deborah Pace at d.pace@att.net.

PEOPLE MIGHT BE SURPRISED TO KNOW: "The most common reason given for surrendering dogs to shelters is not because the dogs have done anything wrong, but because the owners are moving," Pace said. "Shelters and rescue groups are full of healthy, well-behaved dogs that have lost their homes through no fault of their own. They are just waiting for someone who will love them and care for them the rest of their lives."
