BLOOM TOWNSHIP - Sandridge Elementary District 172 will spend about $42,900 to have asbestos removed from floor tiles and tile adhesive in some classrooms, a former office area and a hallway at Sandridge School.
During an abbreviated school board meeting Wednesday, the board awarded a contract to Champion Environmental Services of Crown Point for the asbestos removal work.
The asbestos removal project is scheduled to begin next March, once work on the school's proposed classroom addition is substantially completed. The asbestos removal is expected to take four to six weeks to complete, Superintendent Troy Paraday said.
Plans are to move students and staff from the rooms where the asbestos removal will take place and into the new addition and the school's 1997 addition. The work is scheduled to take place before renovation work at the school will begin.
The School Board postponed action on other agenda items when board member Laurie Kieta left the meeting early due to illness. Without Kieta, the board did not have a quorum to conduct business. Board members Ronald Newcomb, Curtis Rowe and Shari Urban were not in attendance for the meeting.
The board will reconvene its meeting at 8 p.m. May 18.
Prior to Kieta's departure, the board approved the expulsion of an eighth-grade student for the remainder of the current school year. The district is checking to determine whether the student has met all of the academic standards needed to receive his diploma from Sandridge this year.
However, the student will not be allowed to participate in the eighth-grade graduation ceremony, officials said.
The board also approved the expulsion of a sixth-grade student for the remainder of the school year. The student will be placed in an alternative education setting at the start of the 2004-05 school year.
District officials would not comment on reasons for the expulsions.
In other matters, the board adopted the 2004-05 school year calendar. The calendar sets Aug. 24 as the first student attendance day of the new school year. The last day students will be in attendance will be June 2, 2005 if no emergency days are used.
In personnel matters, the board approved a contract with Nadine Harris as a special education learning disability teacher, at a salary of $34,250 and with Emma Hines as a permanent substitute teacher at a salary of $22,200, both for the 2004-05 school year.
The board also approved a contract with Cheryl Menke as a social worker at a salary of $32,770 for the current school year and at a salary of $34,650 for the 2004-05 school year. The board also approved a contract with Joan Elton as a speech pathologist at a salary of $45,000 and Valerie Fauntleroy as a special education communications development teacher at a salary of $35,750, both for the 2004-05 school year.
The district is creating the position of communications development teacher and is hiring Elton in order to serve Sandridge students who are currently at off-campus settings. The students will be at Sandridge starting with the new school year.
