Helping people escape into a world of relaxation with a touch of pampering is what Debbie Morrison says her business is all about.

Morrison, 43, of Crown Point, owns Shear Magic, a hair/tanning/day spa located at 2000 Main St.

"By all means. I'm all about service,'' Morrison said. "I believe that when someone comes to me they're here for the reason to look better, relax, or just get an hour of escapism from the stress of everyday life".

Morrison had been a hair stylist for 23 years when she decided to open Shear Magic in 1990. As times and markets have changed in the last decade, she saw a need for such a business.

It offers tanning beds, a full-service salon, pedicures, manicures, make-up applications, aromatherapy, facials, reflexology (foot), massages, and ear candling -- a remedy dating back 100 years that helps get wax out of an ear canal and a peppermint lotion message to open up the sinuses.

Lynne Poppe, a message therapist at Shear Magic, performs the ear candling procedure with a cone-shaped bees wax that is inserted into the ear and then lit. The heat creates a suction that pulls out the wax.

Shear Magic also offers the following among its available massages:

* Swedish, to help improve circulation and flexibility.

* Therapeutic, a customized and invigorating massage that increases energy and loosens tight muscles.

* Deep Tissue, an intense, full-body massage using deep pressure throughout the body.

* Stone, in which hot stones are used to penetrate deep into muscles for relaxation. Massages last from half an hour to an hour.

Before a client decides upon a massage there is a 15-minute consultation to determine whether the person has a medical condition that would prohibit the treatment.

"Message therapy is something that is big and has grown over the years,'' Morrison said. "People are so uptight in this uptight world, that getting a massage to relax may give you a different attitude."

Morrison remains a licensed hair stylist and certified a hair color expert.

"Hair is a big business and bringing out the person with the right look and color is critical," she said.

Rene Trulley, a long-time client agrees.

"Debbie is very conscientious about her work and cares about how you look when she is finished.

"I have a handicapped daughter and (Morrison) knows how to handle her and make her look her best.''

Shear Magic employs 19 people in the service they provide. Morrison believes that to run a successful business, one must keep up with the times.

Morrison and her employees attend seminars that teach motivation and the latest techniques that can be passed on to her clients.
