Performance highlights domestic violence
"Battered, Shattered Dreams" will be performed for free as part of the activities to spotlight Domestic Violence Month at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Jean Shepherd Center, 173rd and Kennedy on Mahoney Drive. Children younger than 16 may attend the performance only if accompanied by an adult. A chili dinner will be served from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Dinner tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children. A panel of domestic violence experts will answer questions after the play. Haven House is sponsoring this event with support from the city and Hammond Police Department.

Annual Christmas in Country bazaar Friday
St. Anthony Auxiliary will sponsor its annual Christmas in the Country bazaar from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday in Marian Education Center at St. Anthony Medical Center, 1201 S. Main St. The bazaar features all handmade items including homemade items in the bakery. Autumn designs will be displayed in addition to the usual Christmas styles. This year, handmade afghans and baby items, Christmas tree skirts, stockings and ornaments will be showcased, plus seasonal arrangements and wreaths.

Sickle cell annual dinner is Friday
Northwest Indiana Sickle Cell Foundation will celebrate 32 years of providing sickle cell services during its annual dinner Friday at Buffington Harbor Pavilion, 1 Buffington Harbor. Sickle cell is an inherited disease caused by the presence of hemoglobin S in red blood cells, and it affects more than 50,000 U.S. residents. Highlights of the dinner include the introduction of the 2003-04 sickle cell poster child and awards to individuals in the community. New Orleans Blues Band, Lady Sax and others will perform. Reception is 6 to 7 p.m. with dinner served at 7 p.m. Tickets, $50, may be bought at the door.

Hike and bike event Saturday on local trails
"Gary Green Link" Hike and Bike will be Saturday on Gary's trails. Hike will be at 10 a.m. Participants should meet at Marquette Park Aquartorium, located off Grand Boulevard, for a trolley ride to the Marquette Trail Head at Grand Boulevard. Bike tour will be at 1 p.m. Participants should meet at Indiana University Northwest, 33rd and Broadway, to bike the Little Calumet River Trail to Lake Etta County Park.
