CHESTERTON
Buy perennials at garden club's sale
A wide variety of perennials, including daylilies "Salieri" and "James Marsh," will be available from 7:30 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the semi-annual plant sale of Duneland Garden Club. It will take place at the vacant site of the former St. Patrick Church, Third Street and Indiana Avenue, in downtown Chesterton. Among plants offered will be grape hyacinth, daffodil bulbs, water hyacinth, sedum, gooseneck loosestrife and strawberry and raspberry plants. Those wishing to donate plants for the sale should bring potted, clearly marked specimens to the site at 7 a.m. Donations of clean, empty plastic pots, preferably one-gallon size of large, are appreciated. Money raised is returned to the community in donations and service projects.

Music under the Stars is Friday
Taltree Arboretum and Gardens' Joseph E. Meyer Memorial Pavilion will be the location for a Music Under the Stars concert from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. Event will feature Catlin Hale & Company, who will perform jazz and blues standards. Enter the grounds at 450 W. County Road 100 North.

Service group sets fund-raiser car wash
Alpha Phi Omega of Valparaiso University will sponsor a fund-raiser car wash from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday in the Gellersen Hall parking lot, southeast corner of campus. Gellersen is the first building on the left when entering campus from Sturdy Road. Profits go to support the organization's service at Spring Valley Shelter, Opportunity Enterprises and Union Township Middle School.

Outreach conference this weekend
Vineyard Christian Fellowship, 552 Morthland Drive (Horseprairie Avenue and U.S. 30), will sponsor a Worship & Outreach Conference Friday through Sunday at the church. Worship leader, composer and writer David Ruis will be keynote speaker. There will be upbeat worship at five conference sessions as well as times of personal prayer. There is no registration fee. First session is at 7 p.m. Friday.

National Guard's open house Saturday
Indiana National Guard will sponsor an open house from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Valparaiso National Guard Armory, 1502 Linwood Ave. There will be free rides on an armored personnel carrier and a Hummer. There'll be a drawing for an XBOX.

Club sponsors poker run benefit
Leroy's Hot Stuff, 333 W. U.S. 20 (one mile west of Ind. 49 on U.S. 20), will sponsor a poker run benefit for Joe White, a paralysis victim, Sunday. Donation is $10. Sign-up is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. There'll be a dart tournament at noon, and food and entertainment at 3 p.m. Performers will include Street Level, Tremor, Tommy Thompson, Super Natural and Chester Brown.

Westville Legion serves pancakes
Westville American Legion Post 21 will sponsor an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast from 7 a.m. to noon Sunday at the hall. Menu includes pancakes, eggs, sausage and beverage. Price is $4.75 for adults, $4 for senior citizens, $3.25 for children age 10 and younger, and no charge for preschoolers.

Westville American Legion Post 21 will be host for a euchre tournament Saturday. Doors open at noon with games beginning at 1 p.m. Cost is $5. Refreshments will include sloppy joes, chips and potato salad.
