Poker run benefit diabetes research
Schererville Fraternal Order of Eagles and four other Eagle clubs in Lake County will sponsor a poker run to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation at 8 a.m. Sept. 13 at Lakeside Inn, 21 E. Joliet St. Registration is from 8 to 10 a.m. Cost is $10/single and $15/couple and includes food, refreshments, raffle and entertainment by Country Roads Band. Proceeds from raffle will go to the Indiana Ronald McDonald House.

Historical society needs railroad workers
Griffith Historical Society is seeking people who worked on any of the railroads that traveled through Griffith at any time to assist at the Depot Museum for Railroad Fair Sept. 27 and 28. All railroad positions are desired to share experiences with visitors during the open house 2 to 4 p.m. Sept. 28. Anyone interested, including present employees, should register.

Methodists serve pork chop, chicken dinner
A pork chop and chicken breast dinner will be served from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Hammond First United Methodist Church, 6635 Hohman Ave. Meal consists of pork chop or chicken breast, tossed salad, baked potato, dessert and beverage. Cost is $8 for adults for one pork chop or chicken breast, $10 for two pieces of meat. Kids' meals cost $2.

Young cheerleaders gain skills at camp
Morton High School cheerleaders will host a cheer camp from 6 to 8 p.m. daily Monday to Thursday at the high school, 6915 Grand Ave. It is open to girls in kindergarten through eighth grade. Campers will cheer at the home football game Sept. 12. Pre-register in the student service office or on the first day of camp. Cost is $25.

Health fair, school supplies part of outreach event
Back 2 School Community Outreach, sponsored by Christ's Vision Bethel Temple Youth Ministries and Nurses of Bethel Temple, will be at 7 p.m. Sept. 12 and at noon Sept. 13 at Bethel Temple, 110 W. 43rd Ave. Event will feature an outside fest and health fair. Free school supplies will be distributed.

Symphony singers invited to try out
Auditions for the Northwest Indiana Symphony Chorus's 2003-04 concert season will take place from noon to 8 p.m. today and from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts, 1040 Ridge Road. Previous choral experience is recommended. Vocal range, aural abilities and sight reading will be tested; no prepared vocal selection is required. The 120-voice chorus, under the direction of Nancy Menk, performs regularly with Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra. Weekly rehearsals are Tuesday evenings.

Discover dairy delights at Buckley Homestead
Products of the cow, ranging from milk and cheese to butter and ice cream, will be featured at the 1910s farm and the pioneer farm from noon to 5 p.m. Sept. 13 and 14 during Dairy Days at Buckley Homestead, 3606 Belshaw Road. Attendees can take a turn at the butter churn throughout the afternoon or hand crank the old-fashioned ice cream maker at 1 and 3 p.m. (including a taste of the final product). Toss bean bags at the "wooden cow" and play other old-time games in the one-room schoolhouse. Families will enjoy the parkwide eyes-only scavenger hunt. Take answers to the schoolmarm to see jhow many are right. Cost is $2 for adults, $1 for seniors and children younger than 12. Buckley Homestead Corn Maze, north of the historical part of the park, also will be open. Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for children ages 5-12.
