CRETE

Head to garden party, five in fact, on tour

A Day in the Country hosted by Crete Woman's Garden Club will showcase five gardens in the Crete area from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 25 and 26 -- rain or shine. Participants also will visit Plum Creek Nature Center in Goodenow Forest Preserve. An interpreter will give talks about the butterfly and bird attracting gardens outside the center. Tickets for the garden walk and lunch are $18 and must be reserved by Friday. Tickets are available at Crete Township Hall, 1367 Wood St. To order tickets, send a self addressed, stamped, business size envelope with payment to: Crete Woman's Club, P.O. Box 104, Crete, IL 60417. Indicate name, phone number, choice of day and ticket quantity with payment. Tickets for the garden walk only are $10.

BLUE ISLAND

Cars make this Dixie dash classic

Chicago Southland Dixie Dash 2003, an automotive tri-venture for vehicles 1975 or older, will be on June 21. A brief orientation meeting prior to parade kickoff will begin at 10 a.m. in Blue Island. The path of the parade will follow Dixie Highway through the communities of: Blue Island, Posen, Harvey, Hazel Crest, Homewood, Flossmoor, Chicago Heights, Steger, Crete, Beecher, Grant Park and Momence. Poker Run will begin at the midpoint of the parade route. All Poker Run participants will be expected to participate in the first half of the parade. The route will follow secondary paved roads to the indicated checkpoints for a card draw. Poker Run entry fee is $35 per entry and $5 for each additional person. The TSD Rallye will begin at the midpoint of the parade route. All TSD Rallye participants will be expected to participate in the first half of the parade. entry fee is $80 per entry. Two people are allowed in the vehicle. Fee to participate only in the parade is $15 and $5 for each additional person.

Black author's group to discuss DeBerry book

Families can fill up on spaghetti tonight

All-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner will be from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. every Wednesday this month at Lansing Knights of Columbus 3540 Council, 178th Street and Lorenz Avenue. Cost for spaghetti with sauce is $5.50, or with meatballs $6, served with salad, choice of dressing, garlic bread, and dessert. Chili and lake perch special also will be available.

AKC all-breed shows set for Thursday, Friday

Valparaiso Kennel Club will host back to back AKC all-breed dog shows and obedience trials at 9 a.m. Thursday and Friday at Porter County Expo Center, Rt. 49 and Division Road. More than 1000 dogs representing more than 120 breeds will participate. There is no fee. "Doggie" supply and food vendors will be available.
