BIRD'S EYE VIEW with Robin Wilkening
Technically, summer does not begin until Sunday, June 22, but hopefully for the City of Portage and our fire department, this week's pleasantly warm weather will continue on Saturday at Woodland Park.
Oh yeh, it's time for Portage Fire Department's second annual Summerfest. I had such a good time last year. There were lots of good friends, food, drink and dancing until the wee hours of the night. Anyone who knows me knows that I love to dance. I may not be the greatest dancer, but it sure feels good to get out there and dance all the stress of daily life away.
Summerfest will be outside at Woodland Park again with more fun than you could ever imagine. The department has planned many more activities this year. Event will start at 6 p.m. and run until midnight. There is an admission fee of $5 to enter.
A new addition to Summerfest will be a Vegas Night, which will run all night for the high rollers out there. There will be 10 tables consisting of poker, blackjack, big wheel and dice games. There also will be two raffles that night. The first is a raffle that entitles the winner to a trip to Las Vegas for two.
Second prize will be an overnight stay at Trump Casino and Hotel with a buffet dinner. Other prizes include Colts tickets, Purdue football tickets and other sports items. The second raffle is for a wheelbarrow full of liquor of all kinds. Winner will have to be present for this prize as it will be necessary for the winner to wheel the libations away. Both raffle winners will be announced that night.
The band this year will be The Current, a group that's popular in the local and Chicago suburb venues. It plays popular cover and classic rock music. The Current will take the stage at 9 p.m. and will play throughout the evening.
There will be brats, hamburgers and chips available for all those hunger pangs the crowd works up dancing. Food is $3.
Of course, the night would not be complete without the beer tent. Clancey's of Portage will allow Portage firefighters and their spouses to serve cold frosty beer or ruity malt liquor to the thirsty crowd. Northcoast Distributors will supply the libations.
Whether it be the food, drink, music or games that makes your day, come and make it an evening to remember with Portage Firefighters!
