NW INDIANA--This summer the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and Environmental Learning Center offer professional development opportunities for kindergarten-12 teachers and non-formal educators through its Dunes Educator Institutes. The goal of these institutes is to provide educators with experiences that will inspire and assist them in using the Indiana Dunes as an extension of their classrooms for the enrichment of their students and themselves.

Dunes 203 is a week-long workshop offered July 7-11. This workshop will focus on hands-on artistic activities such as, book-making, watercolor, photography, and collage. Unique field explorations will compel participants to incorporate the arts into all disciplines and curricula. Instructors include staff from the Marwen Foundation of Chicago as well as local artists. The [Great Lakes Institute] Dunes 104 offered July 14-17 focuses on the issues and ecology of Lake Michigan. Participants will dive into this region's most important natural resource through hands-on exploration of the lake with staff from the Annis Water Resources Institute on board their educational vessel. Session topics include lake ecology, exotic species, water quality monitoring, and snorkeling. Teachers will gain valuable materials and activities to incorporate into their classrooms including excerpts from the Great Lakes in My World Curriculum, developed by the Lake Michigan Federation. Both workshops offer

graduate credit through Indiana University Northwest or Chicago State University, for an extra cost. Registration is limited to 40 participants for each workshop. Call the Learning Center at (219) 395-9555 or email gpidelc@netnitco.net to receive a registration packet and reserve a spot. Cost of each workshop is $225 and includes meals, lodging in the Learning Center's comfortable cabins and lots of materials.
