CHICAGO HEIGHTS -- The memory of former Prairie State College English Department faculty member Vivien J. Costello is kept alive through a scholarship fund that bears her name. Her legacy as a gifted and giving teacher is honored through the Vivien J. Costello Scholarship for Outstanding Students. Scholarship is available to any current Prairie State student who has successfully completed or is in the process of completing English 101 with a passing grade. Eligible students also must attend PSC during the spring semester when the awards are granted. This semester, nine students received awards ranging from $125 to $750 and totaling $3,025. Spring 2003 recipients of the award include: Corrie Sharp of Dyer; Renne Rohr, Kelly Wojtanowicz and Jennifer Kendra of Sauk Village; Susan Harvey of Park Forest; Cherise Stone of Oak Forest; Mariwanna Monick Hobbs of Hazel Crest; Monica Anderson of Burbank; and Crystal Brands of Beecher. SOUTH HOLLAND -- Irene Iwanetz of South Holland is helping to set up the Kovaluk Scholarship Fund for students of the village of Zabolotivci, Ukraine, in honor of Melania Kovaluk who was the first of the family to emigrate from Ukraine to the United States. Other descendants contributed to the fund that is estimated in excess of $50,000. Interest from the fund will be given annually to selected students from the village to help finance their education at schools, colleges, universities and other educational institutions in Ukraine. CHICAGO -- Sports Lodge B'nai B'rith will offer athletic scholarships to deserving young men and women of Jewish faith who graduate at the end of the school year from a Chicago area high school. For information, call (847) 940-1300, Ext. 3299.

Bayer CropScience, maker of herbicides, announces a college scholarship available to high school seniors who are interested in pursuing a college education in an agriculture-related field. Five scholarships will be awarded: one each in Iowa, Indiana, Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota. Each scholarship winner will receive $1,000 toward the cost of college-level studies. Additionally, $1,000 will be donated to the FFA chapter of each of the winning applicants' high schools. The 2003 scholarship will be awarded to the applicant in each of the five states who demonstrates the highest level of compatibility and commitment in pursuit of a successful career in agriculture. Visiting Nurse Association Foundation is accepting application for the Lukach Memorial Scholarship. Scholarship is awarded each year to assist an individual currently employed in the health care field to advance his or her education within the industry. Applications are for scholarship assistance in the Fall of 2003, and they must be returned to the VNA Foundation Office, 501 Marquette St in Valparaiso, no later than June 30.
