WANATAH AND LaCROSSE with Grace Chambly

An open house is planed for 1-3 p.m. June 21 at Wanatah American Legion, 205 S. Washington St, The occasion is the 80th birthday of Leotta Wood-Ziegler. Please join with friends and family members in attending. The Happy Birthday song will be sung and cake will be served at 1:30 p.m. For information, call Julie Neiner at (219) 393-5619.

LaCrosse Council news

Maintenance man Jerry Jackson reported to the LaCrosse Town Council that the town hall roof repairs have been completed including replacement of rotted wood.

The new Welcome to LaCrosse signs have been installed at the entrances to the town.

LaCrosse Fire Department has set a planning session to prioritize necessary jobs for completing the outside and inside of the new fire department/community building. Members will meet at 7 p.m. June 19 at the building. The department is awaiting a letter from the Insurance Service Office, Inc. with hope that the town's insurance rating will be lowered.

Residents are reminded that a permit must be obtained for permission to tear down a structure. The reason is the structure will be removed from the tax rolls and no tax will be due on the structure.

There will be no Planning Commission meeting in July. The next session is at 7 p.m. Aug. 4 at town hall.

The council decided to raise the price of water deposits from $25 to $100.

Betty Wonch asked if the electrical connection at Ver-Mar Park could be raised from 100 amp service to 200 amp service. Wonch reported that a free concert is being planned for a Saturday in August. Any area bands who would like to perform are asked to contact Wonch at (219) 754-1007.

The next meeting is at 7 p.m. July 14 at town hall.

Library news

The Wild and Wacky summer programs are 2-3 p.m. Tuesdays at LaCrosse Public Library. Last week a magician taught children magic tricks. Other performers include a unicyclist and a bubbleologist and other surprises.

The reading program will continue until the party, July 15. Prizes and tickets will be given for reading books.

Librarian Pat Spiess reminds patrons that blood pressure readings are done at the library on the first Friday of the month from 9 to 11 a.m.

The postponed meeting of the South Central school board is at 7:30 tonight in the school conference room.

Dewey Township Advisory board will meet at 6 p.m. June 24 at LaCrosse School. There will be an executive session to follow.
