ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Jackie Bukowski, a teacher at Kahler Middle School, is one of two teachers Lake Central School Corp. named Teacher of the Year for 2003. She was presented with a plaque at a recent school board meeting, and her peers and students commemorated the honor at her school. Bukowski teaches seventh-grade life science. She inspires students to learn by incorporating creative and innovative teaching techniques, as well as hands-on activities into her lesson plans. Bukowski involves students in singing a rap song with lyrics that outline parts of a cell. They also learn a song detailing the digestion process and organs involved, and cartoon picture panes detail the brain and nervous system. "My goal is to always excite students about learning and to make learning fun," she said. "And the more active they are, the more they enjoy it." Bukowski involves students in round-robin labs in which they move from station to station. They work with microscopes, do water sampling, take
nature scavenger hunts in the school courtyard and surveys to learn about genetics and the identification of dominant and recessive traits. Bukowski joined the seventh-graders and teachers on a trip to the Indiana Dunes this year for a study of the environment that incorporated all subjects. "Team teaching is very important to the education process," she said. "Teaming has allowed teachers to work together and be creative so the children can enjoy learning, and without teaming we would never have accomplished all of this." Bukowski serves on the staff advisory committee and has presented brain research workshops to Kahler's faculty.
PERSONAL HERO: "Sister Francis Catherine of Bishop Noll Institute. When I hated reading, she showed me books that made reading exciting and made me want to read more."
FAVORITE BOOK/AUTHOR: "I actually love murder mysteries. I like William Kienzel, Agatha Christie and John Grisham."
ADVICE: "From the day you're born until the day you die, every one of us should be learning. Challenge yourself to learn something new every day."
WHY I'M IN EDUCATION: "I can never remember a time I didn't want to be a teacher, and I just hope I was the teacher parents would have wanted me to be for their children."
PEOPLE MIGHT BE SURPRISED TO KNOW: "To see my grandchildren I have to travel, and that's what I spend my time doing in the summer."
