Why did the peace demonstrations against the war in Iraq seem so futile, so irrelevant? Why are the plaintive cries of mothers who lost their children in the war not causing revulsion of war as a means to settle international disputes?
The only reason that I can think of is that the American people wanted a war. The urge to beat the heck out of a weakling Arab state overcame any moral scruples. Led by an administration that has not done one intelligent thing since it took office, that has no notion of where our aggression will lead to, the American people waved their flags and used their weapons of mass destruction to decimate Iraq.
What a pathetic expression of national purpose. What a cowardly way to arouse national unity. What a desperate means to manufacture national heroes.
